Increased Minimum Liability Limits
Over the past years, the minimum automobile liability coverage for bodily injury has been $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. These limits were established in 1999 and have not been updated since that time.
With the passing of new legislation on July 1, 2025, the new minimum automobile liability limit coverage for bodily injury will increase to $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident and $50,000 for property damage.
Automobile owners should review their current policies to make sure these limits have been increased to be compliant with the new legislation. Most carriers will automatically increase these limits on your automobile policy renewal, but you are responsible for verifying that your limits are compliant with the new legislation. When you receive your automobile policy renewal, please verify you have met the new minimum limits required by the State of North Carolina.
