Motorcycle Insurance - What do I Need to Cover My Bike

Motorcycle Insurance

Spring is here and that means that motorcycle season is underway.  With the increased number of motorcyclists on the road, it is important to make sure that everyone has the proper insurance coverage.  Riding a motorcycle can be one of the most thrilling ways to get around, whether you are riding in Eden or on the Blue Ridge Parkway,  yet it can also be one of the most dangerous. That’s why finding good motorcycle insurance is an important part of the preparation process.

Insuring motorcycles can be pricey because of the high risk they pose.  While less than car insurance rates, the cost of motorcycle insurance is not negligible.  You will need to cover the cost of repairing your bike if it is damaged in an accident and you may also want to consider adding a death benefit and disability coverage to your policy as well.  If you have added custom parts to your bike, you’ll need to purchase extra coverage to have them fully insured.  So, if you are a Harley Davidson, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, BMW, or Suzuki you might have custom parts on your bike.

Forty-nine states require bikers to have motorcycle liability insurance (all except Florida - as of this writing). If you took out a loan to purchase your motorcycle, your lender will probably require you to carry comprehensive and collision coverage as well.   You might also consider adding medical payments coverage, especially if you don't have health insurance. Medical payments will help to cover the costs of treating you and any passenger on your motorcycle, even if the accident is your fault.

Uninsured motorist coverage is more expensive for a motorcycle than a car.  That's because if a car is hit by an uninsured driver, the occupants have better protection inside the vehicle. If a motorcyclist is in an accident with an uninsured driver, injuries can be quite extensive or, worse, permanent. For those same reasons, medical payments coverage is also more expensive for a motorcycle than a car.

Motorcycle insurance pricing looks at the model of the motorcycle, value of the motorcycle, climate (meaning where in the country you will be driving it primarily) and your driving record.  Even though there is increased risk with motorcycles, costs can be offset if you don't ride your bike year-round.   Even in warm weather, the vast majority of motorcycles are considered “pleasure” transportation, not primary, which also helps decrease costs.

When it comes to purchasing motorcycle insurance coverage, there is a lot to think about.  We can work with you to find the right insurer and the right policy to give you the peace of mind you need to get you on the road! Whether your are riding in Greensboro, Raleigh, Charlotte, High Point, Kernersville, or yes even Eden, give us a call at Rockingham Insurance for your motorcycle policy.
