Does Your Homeowner's Policy Cover Potential Holiday Mishaps?

Does your homeowner’s liability cover these holiday mishaps?

With all the parties, shopping trips, decorating, and increased activity during the holiday season, there comes the chance of an accident.  Below are some potential scenarios that could occur during this time of year.

1.       Destructive Danny –  Danny, your child who is in a hurry to get his hands on the newest technology gadget, knocks over a display of glassware causing several of the items to shatter.  Since Danny is underage, he might not be liable for the damages, but you might.  If you have Property Damage to Others, you might have some coverage for the damage.

2.       Decorative Daddy – Dad, on his annual pilgrimage to produce the best light show in the neighborhood, slips and falls from the roof and injures his leg.  Since your homeowner’s policy does not pay for injuries to you, dad will have to rely on his Health Insurance coverage to pay for this injury.

3.       Trip’s Trip – Your clumsy friend Trip does not see the cord to the Christmas Tree as he walks to the food table and falls, injuring his hand.   If found liable, your homeowner’s liability policy would most likely pay for the claim and hopefully Trip will be more careful during his next visit.

It is important to review your homeowner’s policy with your agent to make sure you have the correct coverage.  Most homeowner liability policies will start with $100,000 in liability coverage.  Many financial advisors will suggest that you have enough liability coverage to cover the value of your assets (property, investments and savings).   You can also add an umbrella policy to help increase your liability limits.   Take the time to review your policy and have a discussion with your agent.

*Remember that each claim must be evaluated by the carrier’s adjuster to determine whether there is  coverage based on the specifics of the claim.
